"After a lot of research, for our budget we went for the 2018 facelift Outback primary due to it's space, crash testing results and real-world driver death rate figures. IIHS made the comment in their crash testing result (frontal overlap I think), that the 2018 facelift had been structurally reinforced in the front end. I wrote to them to confirm, as absolutely zero reviews of the facelift model had mentioned this (apart from if they had quoted iihs). IIHS replied confirming it, and suggested that very few people knew about the structural changes - even salespeople at Subaru at the time! I mention this in case someone is focused as we are on safest-for-your buck. Crash test results (esp those form a few year back) are only a part of the safety story of course, but it's nice to know the 2018 facelift has a bit of extra protection up front that virtually no-one knows about..."
